Yatmak describes lying down, being in a lying position, or going to bed. You will talk about bedtime habits, last night and your next evening, then compare getting into bed with lying in it.

The idea

Use erken yatmak for going to bed early and geç yatmak for going to bed late. The aorist yatarım suits a habit; yatmam is its negative. The stem keeps its t: yatıyorum, yattım, yatacağım. For “I am not lying down”, use yatmıyorum. Yatağa yatmak names the move into bed; yatakta yatmak describes lying in bed. The table shows forms with plural endings for onlar; a singular verb can also accompany this pronoun.

Watch out

Yattım does not by itself say that you fell asleep: Yattım ama uyumadım is possible. Use uyumak for sleeping. Do not treat the bed as a direct object: yatağa yatmak, not yatağı yatmak. In Sen de erken yatıyor musun?, both de and musun are separate words.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete “I usually go to bed early” with the first-person singular aorist of yatmak.

    Show answer or example answer

    yatarım

yatarım: genellikle points to a routine, and the requested aorist of this verb uses -ar. The ending -ım identifies the speaker.

  2. Complete “Yesterday I went to bed early” with the first-person singular definite past of yatmak.

    Show answer or example answer

    yattım

yattım: yesterday calls for the requested completed past. The stem ends in t, so the past ending starts with t too; both letters remain, followed by dotless ı.

  3. Complete “I will go to bed early this evening” with the first-person singular future of yatmak.

    Show answer or example answer

    yatacağım

yatacağım: the plan is for this evening. In the first-person future, the k of -acak becomes ğ before the vowel of the personal ending; the stem’s t stays.

  4. Put yatak in the dative: I am lying down in bed to rest. Express the movement into bed.

    Show answer or example answer

    yatağa

yatağa: the prompt asks for getting into bed, so the noun needs the dative. The final k in yatak becomes ğ before -a. Yatakta would describe the location.
