You will conjugate yüzmek (to swim) in the present continuous, negative present, past and future, and say where you swim or which way.
The idea
The stem yüz- ends in the consonant z and has the front rounded vowel ü, so the endings round with it: yüzüyorum, yüzmüyorum, yüzdüm. Because z is voiced, the past starts with d. The future -ecek has no rounded shape, and its k becomes ğ before a vowel: yüzecek, yüzeceğim. The place where you swim takes -de/-da: denizde, havuzda; the place you swim to takes -e/-a: kıyıya.
| Person | Present continuous | Negative present | Past | Future |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben | yüzüyorum | yüzmüyorum | yüzdüm | yüzeceğim |
| sen | yüzüyorsun | yüzmüyorsun | yüzdün | yüzeceksin |
| o | yüzüyor | yüzmüyor | yüzdü | yüzecek |
| biz | yüzüyoruz | yüzmüyoruz | yüzdük | yüzeceğiz |
| siz | yüzüyorsunuz | yüzmüyorsunuz | yüzdünüz | yüzeceksiniz |
| onlar | yüzüyorlar | yüzmüyorlar | yüzdüler | yüzecekler |
Examples
- Ben denizde yüzüyorum.I am swimming in the sea.The place where you swim takes -de/-da: deniz + de gives denizde, with -de because the last vowel is front and z is voiced. The pronoun ben may be dropped: Denizde yüzüyorum.
- Annem iyi yüzüyor. My mother swims well.
- Biz dün havuzda yüzdük.We swam in the pool yesterday.
- Hafta sonu yüzeceğiz.We will swim at the weekend. The stem ends in a consonant, so -ecek attaches directly: yüz-ecek. Before the vowel of -iz its k becomes ğ: yüzeceğiz. Hafta sonu (weekend) needs no suffix here.
- Çocuklar karşı kıyıya yüzdü.The children swam to the opposite shore.A destination takes -e/-a: kıyı + buffer y + a gives kıyıya. Compare kıyıda (on the shore), which names the place, not the direction.
- Bugün yüzmedim, çünkü deniz soğuktu.I didn't swim today because the sea was cold.
- yüzmüyorumI am not swimming.yüzmüyor-miyor / -mıyor / -muyor / -müyor: not doing nowum-im / -sin / -iz / -siniz: I am, you are, we are
- yüzdünüzYou (all) swam.yüzdü-di, -dı, -du, -dü, -ti: the past (geldi, yaptı)nüzPast person endings: -m, -n, -k, -niz, -lerThe stem ends in the voiced z, so the past is -dü (not -tü): yüz-dü-nüz. The vowel ü rounds both the tense ending and the person ending.

Watch out
Do not put -e/-a on the place where you swim: denize yüzüyorum means that you are heading for the sea, not that you swim in it. Say denizde yüzüyorum. Do not confuse the verb with the noun yüz (face; hundred) either: yüzüm is my face, yüzüyorum is I swim.
Try it yourself
Present continuous: I am swimming now.

yüzüyorum
yüzüyorum: the last vowel of yüz- is ü, so the present continuous is -üyor, followed by -um for "I".
Past tense: They swam yesterday.

yüzdüler
yüzdüler: z is voiced, so the past starts with d, and ü rounds it to -dü; -ler marks "they".
Add the suffix: I am swimming in the lake.

gölde
gölde: the swimming happens in the lake, so the locative is used; l is voiced and ö is front, so -de.
Future tense: I will swim tomorrow.

yüzeceğim
yüzeceğim: -ecek cannot round, so the vowel is e, and its k becomes ğ before the vowel of -im.
