Write to one friend you address as sen. The model invites Deniz to a small birthday dinner; Deniz already knows where the host lives.

The idea

Build the message in this order: greeting, invitation, day and time, place, request for a reply, closing. Seni akşam yemeğine davet ediyorum makes the invitation explicit. Gelebilir misin? asks whether your friend can come. Add an address if the guest does not know the place.

Watch out

Akşam yemeğinde means “at/during dinner”; in this invitation you need akşam yemeğine, “to dinner”. Also keep the reply deadline separate from the event day: the model asks for news by Friday about a Saturday dinner.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete the invitation to dinner using the right form of yemek. Write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    yemeğine

yemeğine: the phrase is akşam yemeği, and the invitation points to that meal. The final k of yemek becomes ğ before the vowel; the complete phrase is akşam yemeğine.

  2. Dinner starts at 19:00. Write the missing time expression in words.

    Show answer or example answer

    yedide / on dokuzda

yedide / on dokuzda: both locate the start at 19:00 in this dinner context. The first uses the twelve-hour clock, the second the twenty-four-hour clock; bare yedi only names a number.

  3. Ask one friend whether they can come. Write the missing question word with its personal ending.

    Show answer or example answer

    misin

misin: you are asking one friend addressed as sen. The question particle and personal ending form one word, written separately from gelebilir.

  4. Ask for a reply by Friday. Complete the gap using cuma.

    Show answer or example answer

    cuma gününe / cumaya

cuma gününe / cumaya: both combine with kadar to set Friday as the reply deadline. This tells the host when to expect an answer, while the dinner remains on Saturday.

Use it today

Write a 40–60-word invitation to a friend. Change the occasion, day and time in the model. Include the place, ask for a reply and add a greeting and closing. Check that your guest can tell when and where to come.
