Write to a friend while you are still on holiday. The original model below gives a small picture of the place and the day; you do not need to tell the whole trip.

The idea

Use a simple frame: Sevgili Ece, addresses the reader; İzmir'den selamlar! sends greetings from your holiday location. Add two or three short sentences about the weather or what you are doing now. Finish with Sevgiler, on a separate line, then your own name. These are friendly choices, not a compulsory formula.

Read the text

Sevgili Ece,

İzmir'den selamlar! Küçük bir otelde kalıyorum. Burada hava çok güzel. Bugün sahilde yürüyorum. Deniz bugün çok sakin. Sana bir kartpostal yazıyorum. Sen nasılsın? Orada hava nasıl?

Sevgiler, Selin

Watch out

Do not carry İzmir'den into every sentence just because you are writing from there. İzmir'den selamlar! names the source of the greeting; İzmir'de tatildeyim says where you are on holiday. Keep the apostrophe in both forms.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the opening word before your friend’s name: Sevgili or Sevgiler.

    Show answer or example answer

    Sevgili

Sevgili introduces the person you are addressing, so it fits before Ece. The name here belongs to the reader, not the sender.

  2. Complete ‘Greetings from İzmir!’ Choose İzmir'de or İzmir'den.

    Show answer or example answer

    İzmir'den

İzmir'den tells the reader where the greetings come from. Nobody needs to be leaving the city: it is the source of the message.

  3. You are on holiday in İzmir now. Choose İzmir'de or İzmir'den.

    Show answer or example answer

    İzmir'de

İzmir'de locates the holiday. Tatildeyim already says “I am on holiday”; this blank adds where, not where the message comes from.

  4. Choose a warm closing above your signature: Sevgili or Sevgiler.

    Show answer or example answer

    Sevgiler

Sevgiler can stand on its own as a warm closing. Selin below it is the sender’s signature; Sevgili before a name would look like a new opening.

Use it today

Write a postcard of 30–45 words to a friend. Include a greeting, your holiday location, a weather detail and an activity. End warmly and sign it. Check each place ending by asking whether it means “from” or “in”.
