Regional speech can be polite or informal; listen for the relationship and situation.
The idea
In Kansai, おおきに is a regional expression of thanks. ありがとうございます is polite standard Japanese; ありがとう is more familiar. A regional word alone does not determine politeness. The examples use standard Japanese.
Examples
- プレゼントをありがとうございます。Thank you for the gift.
- 今日は手伝ってくださって、ありがとうございます。Thank you for your help today.
- 道を教えてくださって、ありがとうございます。Thank you for showing me the way.
- すみません、もう一度言っていただけますか。Excuse me, could you repeat that?
- 先生に質問をします。I will ask my teacher a question.
- 友達にありがとうと言います。I thank my friend.

Watch out
Not every Kansai speaker uses おおきに; usage varies by place, generation and situation. Dialect is not inherently rude.
