Japanese giving verbs describe the same transfer from different viewpoints. Identify the giver and recipient first.

The idea

あげる presents the giver giving to someone else; くれる presents another person giving to me or someone in my in-group. With もらう, the recipient is the subject and the giver is marked by に or から. After a て-form, these verbs can describe doing or receiving a helpful action: 手伝ってくれる, 手伝ってもらう and 読んであげる.

Watch out

Do not use くれる for something you give to another person. The choice also depends on social relationships: てあげる said directly to an adult can sound patronising, and more respectful forms may be needed with superiors.
