Use 〜たあとは to describe what holds or follows once an event has occurred.
The idea
Attach あとは to the plain past form of a verb: 始まったあとは or 署名したあとは. The following clause describes the situation or consequence after that point; いったん or 一度 can emphasize that the event has occurred.
| Verb | Once it has happened |
|---|---|
| 始まる | 始まったあとは |
| 返す | 返したあとは |
| 署名する | 署名したあとは |
Examples
- いったん契約に署名したあとは、簡単には取り消せません。Once you sign the contract, you cannot easily cancel it.
- 試験が始まったあとは、教室に入れません。Once the exam has started, you cannot enter the room.
- 日が暮れたあとは、道が見えにくくなります。After sunset, the path becomes hard to see.
- 一度冷めたあとは、温め直しても味が変わります。Once it has cooled, the taste changes even if you reheat it.
- 申し込みが終わったあとは、確認のメールが届きます。Once registration is complete, a confirmation email arrives.
- 鍵を返したあとは、もう部屋に戻れません。Once you return the key, you cannot go back into the room.

Watch out
あとで often simply schedules a later action. あとは highlights the subsequent phase or what remains true after the event; context determines the nuance, not an automatic irreversible meaning.
