Use んです to connect what you say to the situation or invite an explanation, rather than simply stating a fact.
The idea
Attach んです to a plain verb or い-adjective: 帰るんです, 帰ったんです, ないんです. For an affirmative present noun or な-adjective use なんです: 休みなんです, 静かなんです. のです is a more formal equivalent; んですか can ask for an explanation.
| Polite form | Explanatory form |
|---|---|
| 帰ります | 帰るんです |
| 帰りました | 帰ったんです |
| 時間がありません | 時間がないんです |
| 休みです | 休みなんです |
| 静かです | 静かなんです |

Watch out
Do not put です directly before んです. For a negative or past noun or な-adjective, use the appropriate plain form, such as 休みじゃないんです or 休みだったんです. A question with んですか can sound insistent without a suitable context.
