Use にしては when an observation differs from what you would expect given a particular standard.

The idea

Attach にしては directly to a noun or a plain clause. The first part supplies the basis for expectation; the second states the surprising observation. 初めてにしては上手 means better than expected for a first attempt.

Watch out

The comparison is relative, not an absolute claim: 冬にしては暖かい can still mean it is cold. Do not insert だ after an affirmative noun before にしては.
