Use という before a noun to identify its name or describe the content of a message, story or meaning.

The idea

A name + という + noun identifies the person or thing: 田中さんという先生. A plain-form clause + という + noun gives its content: 休みだという知らせ. The following noun determines whether it is a notice, story or meaning.
