Use ようだ to state a reasoned impression or describe a resemblance.

The idea

Attach ようだ to a plain verb or い-adjective, to な-adjective + な, or noun + の. Past and negative forms precede ようだ: 降ったようだ, いないようだ. Use ようです for a polite ending; ような modifies a noun and ように modifies a verb.

Watch out

ようだ expresses the speaker’s inference or comparison; hearsay そうだ reports information from another source. Do not insert だ before よう after a noun or な-adjective.
