The watch worth waiting for

The idea

The connective ところが introduces an unexpected turn. The negative 〜ず in 見つからず gives the reason for the delay; 〜甲斐があった means the effort or wait was worthwhile.

• ミカさんは父ちちにもらった腕時計うでどけいを修理しゅうりに出だしました。Mika took the wristwatch her father had given her in for repair.
• 店みせの人ひとは、来週らいしゅうの金曜日きんようびまでに直なおると言いいました。The shopkeeper said it would be fixed by next Friday.
• ところが、その日ひになっても連絡れんらくがなかったので、ミカさんは店みせに電話でんわしました。However, when she had heard nothing by that day, Mika called the shop.
• 古ふるい部品ぶひんが見みつからず、修理しゅうりが遅おくれていると店みせの人ひとは説明せつめいしました。The shopkeeper explained that the repair was delayed because an old part could not be found.
• 店みせの人ひとは謝あやまり、部品ぶひんを探さがしてからもう一度いちど連絡れんらくすると約束やくそくしました。The shopkeeper apologized and promised to contact her again after looking for the part.
• 数日後すうじつご、時計とけいは無事ぶじに直なおり、ミカさんの手てに戻もどりました。A few days later the watch was successfully repaired and returned to Mika.
• ミカさんは待まった甲斐かいがあったと思おもい、また時計とけいを大切たいせつに使つかうことにしました。Mika felt the wait had been worthwhile and decided to take good care of the watch again.

Watch out

The promised Friday is not the return date. The watch comes back a few days later, after the shop searches for a part.
