Two witnesses, two times

The idea

と思います marks what the first witness thinks; はずです expresses the other’s expectation. The stopped station clock explains the first time, while the photo taken immediately afterward records 3:30.

• 駅えきの前まえで自転車じてんしゃが倒たおれた時とき、二人ふたりがそれを見みていました。Two people saw a bicycle fall in front of the station.
• 一人ひとりは「三時さんじだったと思おもいます」と言いいました。One said, “I think it was three o’clock.”
• もう一人ひとりは「三時半さんじはんだったはずです」と答こたえました。The other replied, “It should have been three thirty.”
• 最初さいしょの人ひとが見みた駅えきの時計とけいは、三時さんじで止とまっていました。The station clock the first person had looked at had stopped at three.
• もう一人ひとりは、自転車じてんしゃが倒たおれたすぐ後あとに写真しゃしんを撮とっていました。The other person had taken a photo immediately after the bicycle fell.
• 写真しゃしんの記録きろくには三時半さんじはんと表示ひょうじされていました。The photo’s record displayed three thirty.
• 二人ふたりは記録きろくを確たしかめ、時計とけいが間違まちがいの原因げんいんだと気きづきました。They checked the record and realized that the clock had caused the mistake.

Watch out

A confident はずです is still an expectation, not proof. The photo supports the time only because it was taken immediately after the fall.
