Use a short recording with a reliable transcript and try the sentences below as listening targets.

The idea

Listen once at normal speed for the situation and key words. Replay a short section and write what you hear; compare it with the transcript, marking boundaries and missed sounds. In casual speech ている can become てる, ておく can become とく, and でしまう can become じゃう. Listen again at normal speed, then repeat along with the speaker. Return to the clip later and try a new clip at the same speed.

Examples

I’m heading to the station now.
The train is delayed, so I’ll be a little late.
I’ll look over the documents before the meeting.
I’ve already read that book.
If you don’t have time, tomorrow is fine too.
Sorry, please say that again.

Watch out

Do not assume every unclear sound is a contraction: speakers vary, and context and politeness matter. Slow playback can help locate a gap, but return to normal speed and check the transcript.
