You will choose between sevmek and hoşlanmak and put the thing or person you like in the right case.
The idea
Sevmek is the broad verb: it covers loving people and pets as well as liking food, hobbies and places, and it takes the accusative: kediyi seviyorum, seni seviyorum. Hoşlanmak is narrower, pleasure or enjoyment in something, and it takes the ablative: müzikten hoşlanıyorum. With an activity, sevmek takes -meyi (yüzmeyi seviyorum) and hoşlanmak takes -mekten (yüzmekten hoşlanıyorum).
| Verb | Object with its ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| sevmek | çayı, kediyi, annemi | Çayı seviyorum. |
| hoşlanmak | çaydan, kediden, müzikten | Çaydan hoşlanıyorum. |
| sevmek + eylem | yüzmeyi | Yüzmeyi seviyorum. |
| hoşlanmak + eylem | yüzmekten | Yüzmekten hoşlanıyorum. |
Examples
- Ben çayı çok seviyorum.I like tea a lot.
- Annem gürültüden hoşlanmıyor. My mother does not like noise.
- Ben bu müzikten hoşlanıyorum.I enjoy this music.
- Seni çok seviyorum.I love you very much. For people, sevmek is the verb of love and affection. The person takes the accusative, so sen becomes seni.
- Köpeğimi seviyorum ama havlamasından hoşlanmıyorum.I love my dog, but I do not like its barking. One sentence can hold both verbs: the dog takes the accusative with sevmek (köpeğimi), the barking takes the ablative with hoşlanmak (havlamasından). The k of köpek softens to ğ before a vowel.
- Yüzmeyi seviyorum.I love swimming. After an activity, sevmek takes the noun in -me plus the accusative: yüz-me-yi.
- Yüzmekten hoşlanıyorum.I enjoy swimming. After an activity, hoşlanmak takes the full infinitive and the ablative: yüzmek-ten. The k of -mek stays, because -ten follows a voiceless sound.
- Futbolu seviyor musun?Do you like football?

Watch out
Each verb brings its own case, so çayı hoşlanıyorum and çaydan seviyorum are wrong: say çayı seviyorum or çaydan hoşlanıyorum. With a person, hoşlanmak often suggests attraction, while sevmek says love or affection, so choose carefully.

gürültüden
