Follow a fictional courtroom scene by identifying the speaker and the stage of the case. All examples and dialogue are original learning material; they do not describe a particular series or give legal advice.
The idea
Keep people and events separate: hâkim is the judge, savcı the prosecutor and avukat a lawyer. A tanık is a witness; beyan means a statement. Dava names the case, duruşma a hearing and mahkeme the court. Karar means a decision; in this setting hüküm is the judgment resolving the case.

Watch out
Do not read Duruşma bitti as “the case is over”. It says that the hearing ended. In our fictional scene, Dava devam ediyor explicitly tells you that the case continues.
Try it yourself
Complete: the hearing will start shortly. Choose the word for the hearing.
Show answer or example answer
duruşma
duruşma: the prompt asks for a hearing that is about to start, so the missing noun names that event, not the entire case.
Choose the word for the person acting as the public prosecutor.
Show answer or example answer
savcı
savcı: the clue is the prosecution role on behalf of the public. Avukat means a lawyer, so it does not name that role.
Name the witness who cannot remember the time of the event. A synonym is also accepted.

tanık / şahit
tanık / şahit: both name a witness. A person can forget the time of an event; hüküm names a judgment, not a person.
Add the accusative ending to the word in brackets: the judge announced the specific judgment.
Show answer or example answer
hükmü
hükmü: the judgment is the specific object of açıkladı. Adding the accusative ending drops the second vowel of hüküm: hükmü.
