Follow the information in a waiting-room or bedside exchange: who is the patient, where are they, and what has happened? The examples and short dialogue are original learning material, unrelated to any particular series.

The idea

Learn hospital words with their usual partners: ameliyat olmak means to undergo an operation, while taburcu olmak means to be discharged from hospital. Yoğun bakım names intensive care or its unit; yoğun bakımda tells you where someone is. The ending goes on the last word, and the phrase stays two words. Hasta can name a patient or mean ill, depending on the sentence.

Watch out

Do not swap the patient and the person operating: Babam ameliyat oluyor makes your father the patient, but Babam ameliyat ediyor makes him the person performing the operation. Also, taburcu oldu reports discharge; the phrase itself does not say that every symptom has disappeared.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the verb: my father will undergo an operation tomorrow.

    Show answer or example answer

    olacak

olacak: the father is going to undergo surgery, so the completed phrase is ameliyat olacak. Choosing edecek would make him the person operating on someone.

  2. Complete the location: my mother is still in intensive care.

    Show answer or example answer

    yoğun bakımda

yoğun bakımda: the sentence answers where the mother still is. Yoğun bakıma would express a destination, but this sentence describes no transfer.

  3. Complete the sentence: my older brother was discharged yesterday.

    Show answer or example answer

    taburcu

taburcu: together with oldu, it reports a completed hospital discharge; dün places that event yesterday. Refakatçi oldu would mean that he became an accompanying person.

  4. Choose the word for the person who stays with the patient, rather than the surgeon.

    Show answer or example answer

    refakatçi

refakatçi: the clue is staying beside the patient. Cerrah names the surgeon, whose role is different; the prompt asks about the accompanying person.

Use it today

Write four original turns: a relative asks about an operation, someone gives an update, and the conversation moves to the bedside. Use one location phrase and one hospital role. Then continue to the lesson on warnings and threats.
