These invented lines let you follow a tense exchange without assuming that a character tells the truth. Identify a denial, a request for secrecy and an admission; none of the dialogue comes from a series.

The idea

Yalan söylemek means to lie; sır tutmak means to keep a secret. Concealing information does not by itself tell you whether someone has made a false statement. İnkâr etmek rejects a claim, while itiraf etmek admits something previously hidden or difficult to admit. In Bunu inkâr etmiyorum, the negative belongs to the act of denying: “I am not denying this.” Sana neden inanayım? challenges the other person to give a reason to trust them.

Examples

  • Sana yalan söylemiyorum.I'm not lying to you.
  • Benden ne saklıyorsun? What are you hiding from me?
  • Bu sırrı kimseye söyleme.Don't tell anyone this secret.
  • Sana her şeyi söylemedim.I didn't tell you everything.
  • Bunu inkâr etmiyorum.I'm not denying this.
  • İtiraf ediyorum, mektubu ben sakladım.I admit it: I was the one who hid the letter.
  • Sana neden inanayım?Why should I believe you?
  • Sır tutmak başka, yalan söylemek başka.Keeping a secret is one thing; lying is another.

Watch out

Do not turn Sana her şeyi söylemedim into “I told you nothing”: it says that the account was not complete. Also keep the doubled r in bu sırrı: sır meaning “secret” becomes sırrı before the accusative vowel. Yalan söyleme is a command to stop or avoid lying; yalan söylemiyorum is a denial by the speaker.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete Bu ___ kimseye söyleme. Use sır (secret) as the definite object; write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    sırrı

sırrı: bu points to a particular secret, so the object takes the accusative. This noun doubles its final consonant before the vowel: sır → sırrı.

  2. Say that you are not denying this: Bunu ___. Choose inkâr ediyorum / inkâr etmiyorum.

    Show answer or example answer

    inkâr etmiyorum

inkâr etmiyorum: the speaker is not rejecting the claim. İnkâr ediyorum would reverse that response and mean “I deny it.”

  3. Admit hiding the letter: ___, mektubu ben sakladım. Use itiraf etmek in the first-person present continuous; write the missing words.

    Show answer or example answer

    itiraf ediyorum

itiraf ediyorum: the next clause identifies the speaker as the person who hid the letter. In the present form, etmek has ediyorum, with t changing to d.

  4. What does Sana her şeyi söylemedim acknowledge? Choose eksik anlatma (an incomplete account) or tam anlatma (a complete account).

    Show answer or example answer

    eksik anlatma

eksik anlatma: her şeyi sets the scope at “everything,” and söylemedim denies having told that whole amount. The line does not specify which details were withheld.
