These original exchanges help you distinguish a warning from a threat and propose a calmer conversation. They are invented for this lesson; the threatening behaviour is not a model to follow.

The idea

In these warnings, sakın strengthens a negative command: Sakın o kutuyu açma. Keep the negative verb. Bir daha means “again”; with çarpma, it tells someone not to repeat an action. Yoksa introduces what follows if the request is ignored. Missing a bus is a possible consequence; in the file exchange, the speaker threatens to cause the harm personally. Read the whole exchange, not just the linking word.

Examples

  • Sakın o kutuyu açma.Do not open that box under any circumstances.
  • Bir daha kapıyı çarpma.Don’t slam the door again.
  • Lütfen benimle sakin konuş.Please speak calmly to me.
  • Acele et, yoksa otobüsü kaçıracağız.Hurry up, or we’ll miss the bus.
  • — Sakın o kutuyu açma; içindeki bardaklar kırık. — Tamam, açmıyorum.— Whatever you do, don’t open that box; the glasses inside are broken. — Okay, I’m not opening it.
  • — Bir daha kapıyı çarpma. — Tamam, dikkat ederim.— Don’t slam the door again. — Okay, I’ll be careful.
  • — Bana şifreyi ver, yoksa dosyalarını silerim. — Beni tehdit etme. Sakin konuşalım.— Give me the password, or I’ll delete your files. — Don’t threaten me. Let’s talk calmly.
  • Bu bölümü bir daha izleyelim.Let’s watch this episode again.

Watch out

Bir daha is not a threat by itself: Bu bölümü bir daha izleyelim is an ordinary suggestion. Also distinguish sakın (an emphatic warning) from sakin (calm). In Sakin konuşalım, the dotted i changes the word; this is a proposal to talk calmly, not a prohibition.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the strong warning: “Whatever you do, don’t open that box.”

    Show answer or example answer

    Sakın

Sakın fits because the speaker strongly forbids opening the box. Sakin describes calmness and would not supply that warning.

  2. Choose “again”: tell someone not to repeat the door slamming.

    Show answer or example answer

    Bir daha

Bir daha refers to repeating the door slam. Şimdi would only locate the action now, losing the “not again” meaning.

  3. Complete “Give me the password, or I’ll delete your files.”

    Show answer or example answer

    yoksa

yoksa connects the demand to the threatened deletion. Silerim makes the speaker the person who would delete the files; this is a threat, not simply a warning about an accident.

  4. Complete the calm proposal: “Let’s talk calmly.”

    Show answer or example answer

    konuşalım

konuşalım includes both people in the proposed conversation. Konuşma is a negative command addressed to the other person, so it cannot mean “let’s talk”.

Use it today

Write an original warning about a fragile object and a calm reply. Then identify who would cause the consequence in the password exchange. Continue with the lesson on blame and regret.
