These original exchanges each involve two people. Compare the address before and after the tension rises: the change matters more than a pronoun in isolation. No dialogue comes from a series.

The idea

For one addressee, an unexpected move from sen to siz can create distance: in the fourth example, Siz bilirsiniz follows familiar address and ends the discussion coldly. A move from siz to sen can express anger, as in the fifth example, or invited familiarity, as in the sixth. Read the surrounding replies and consider the tone; neither direction has one fixed emotional meaning. Track sana/size, seni/sizi and verb endings too. In Beni anlıyor musunuz?, the pronoun is absent but the address remains formal or plural.

Examples

  • Bana neden siz diyorsun? Why are you addressing me formally?
  • Sen bana güvenmiyor musun?Don’t you trust me? (familiar address)
  • Bana sen diyebilirsiniz. You may address me informally. (said with formal address)
  • — Sen beni hiç dinlemiyorsun. — Yine aynı tartışma. — Siz bilirsiniz. Artık karışmıyorum.— You never listen to me. — The same argument again. — As you wish. I’m staying out of it now. (switching to formal address)
  • — Sizi dinliyorum, devam edin. — Bu karar sizi ilgilendirmez. — Sen bana böyle konuşamazsın!— I’m listening to you; go on. (formal) — This decision is none of your business. (formal) — You can’t speak to me like that! (switching to familiar address)
  • — Size nasıl hitap edeyim? — Bana sen diyebilirsiniz. — Peki, sen ne düşünüyorsun?— How should I address you? (formal) — You may address me informally. — All right, what do you think? (familiar)
  • Beni anlıyor musunuz, yoksa konuşmayı bitirelim mi?Do you understand me, or shall we end the conversation? (formal or plural)

Watch out

Do not translate every siz as several people, or treat every new sen as friendship. In these two-person exchanges, the hostile reply in the fifth example gives the switch its confrontational force. With a group, siz may simply be plural, with no change in emotional distance.

Try it yourself

  1. In example 4, the speaker ends with Siz bilirsiniz. Artık karışmıyorum. Which reading fits the withdrawal: mesafe (distance) or yakınlık (closeness)? Write the Turkish word.

    Show answer or example answer

    mesafe

mesafe: the speaker stops intervening after being dismissed. The withdrawal, together with the new formal address, supports a reading of distance rather than warmth.

  2. In example 5, formal address becomes Sen bana böyle konuşamazsın! Does the last reply express öfke (anger) or samimiyet (friendliness)? Write the Turkish word.

    Show answer or example answer

    öfke

öfke: the last reply rejects how the other person is speaking. Here the abrupt familiar address accompanies a protest; nobody has invited greater closeness.

  3. Invite one person to address you familiarly. Complete with sen or siz: Bana ___ diyebilirsiniz.

    Show answer or example answer

    sen

sen: the speaker explicitly permits familiar address. The formal ending in diyebilirsiniz addresses the listener politely while offering that change.

  4. One person hears Beni anlıyor musunuz? Which omitted pronoun matches the verb form: sen or siz?

    Show answer or example answer

    siz

siz: musunuz retains the formal or plural address. Since the prompt specifies one listener, this is formal singular address, even without an overt pronoun.
