You will say how much or how strongly something is true, and tell çok, az, biraz and fazla apart.
The idea
A degree word stands directly before the adjective, adverb or verb it measures, and takes no ending: çok yorgunum, biraz korkuyor. çok means very or a lot, biraz a little, az little (hardly any, not enough), and fazla more than is good, that is too: çok az is very little.
| Word | Example |
|---|---|
| çok | Bugün çok yorgunum. |
| biraz | Kahveye biraz süt koyuyorum. |
| az | Evde az ekmek var. |
| çok az | Dün gece çok az uyudum. |
| fazla | Çorba bugün fazla tuzlu. |
Examples
- Bugün çok yorgunum.I am very tired today.
- Kahveye biraz süt koyuyorum.I am putting a little milk in the coffee.
- Çorba bugün fazla tuzlu. The soup is too salty today.fazla means more than is good, so the soup is too salty, not just very salty.
- Dün gece çok az uyudum.I slept very little last night.çok strengthens az: çok az is very little. One degree word may stand before another.
- Evde az ekmek var. There is little bread at home.az says there is not enough. Evde biraz ekmek var would say there is some.
- Bu hafta fazla çalıştım.I worked too much this week.
- Çocuk biraz korkuyor. The child is a little scared.
- Bu ders çok zor değil.This lesson is not very difficult. The degree word stands before the adjective and değil follows it: not very difficult.

Watch out
Do not use fazla for a plain "very". Çay fazla sıcak is a complaint (too hot to drink), while çay çok sıcak only says it is very hot. az and biraz are not twins either: az ekmek var warns that the bread is short, biraz ekmek var only says there is some.
Try it yourself
Fill the gap: the tea is hotter than is good (too hot).
Show answer or example answer
fazla
fazla: the tea is hotter than is good, which is what fazla means; çok would only say that it is very hot.
Fill the gap: there is hardly any bread at home, not enough.
Show answer or example answer
az
az: the bread is not enough, and az carries that warning; with biraz there would be some.
Fill the gap: this film is very beautiful.
Show answer or example answer
çok
çok: the film is simply very beautiful, with no complaint, and çok stands directly before the adjective güzel.
Fill the gap: can you give me a little water?
Show answer or example answer

biraz: a small amount that is welcome and enough, so biraz stands before the noun su.
