A friend has a test tomorrow; a colleague is about to give a presentation. You can offer a short wish or make it a full sentence. Practise choosing the recipient and responding to the wish.

The idea

Bol şans! and İyi şanslar! both wish someone luck with something still ahead. Learn them as complete phrases; the plural in şanslar does not mean that you are addressing several people. Add sana for one person you address informally, or size for a group or a person you address politely. Sana bol şans dilerim makes the wish explicit: I wish you good luck. Name the occasion with sınavda (in the test) or sunumun için (for your presentation). Başarılar dilerim wishes success. A simple reply is Teşekkürler or Teşekkür ederim.

Watch out

If the person has already passed, Tebrikler! celebrates the result; İyi şanslar! points towards a challenge still ahead. Also distinguish the recipient from an object: say sana bol şans dilerim, not seni bol şans dilerim.

Try it yourself

  1. The competition starts soon. Choose a luck wish: Bol şans, İyi şanslar or Tebrikler.

    Show answer or example answer

    Bol şans / İyi şanslar

Bol şans / İyi şanslar: the competition has not started, so either phrase expresses a wish for the outcome. Neither claims that the person has already won.

  2. Complete ___ bol şans dilerim. Use the recipient form of informal sen (you).

    Show answer or example answer

    sana

sana: this person receives your wish. The informal pronoun sen therefore becomes sana; seni would mark a direct object.

  3. Someone wishes you luck before your test. Thank them with either short reply taught here.

    Show answer or example answer

    Teşekkürler / Teşekkür ederim

Teşekkürler / Teşekkür ederim: both acknowledge the encouragement. You need not wish luck back when only you are taking the test.

  4. The test is over and your friend has passed. Choose Tebrikler or İyi şanslar to celebrate the result.

    Show answer or example answer

    Tebrikler

Tebrikler: passing is now an achieved success. You are celebrating that news, so congratulations fits this choice better than a wish about an uncertain result.

Use it today

Write two short exchanges: wish a friend luck before a test, then encourage a group before a competition. Include a thank-you reply in each and choose the recipient form deliberately.
