Şirket means a business or company. You will describe where people work, who receives a proposal and which companies belong to a group, then recognise the same noun inside sigorta şirketi (insurance company).

The idea

The stem keeps its final t, even before a vowel: şirketi, şirkete, şirketimiz. With location and source endings, the two adjacent consonants are both written: şirkette, şirketten. Possession comes before case: şirketimizden means from our company, while şirketlerimizden adds several companies. In sigorta şirketi, the final -i marks the noun compound; the dative is sigorta şirketine, with n before -e.

Watch out

Do not treat every şirketi as an accusative. In Bu şirketi tanıyorum, it is the object; in onun şirketi, it means his or her company. When sending something to an insurance company, retain the compound ending: sigorta şirketine, not sigorta şirkete.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete: We work at the same company. Use şirket.

    Show answer or example answer

    şirkette

şirkette: the sentence asks where we work. The last vowel is e, and the final voiceless t requires -te, so the spelling has two consecutive t letters.

  2. Complete: Do you know this company? Use şirket.

    Show answer or example answer

    şirketi

şirketi: bu identifies the company, and tanımak takes it as a definite object. Add the accusative -i without changing the stem’s t to d.

  3. Complete: We sent a question to the insurance company. Keep the compound sigorta şirketi.

    Show answer or example answer

    şirketine

şirketine: the question is sent to a recipient, so the compound needs the dative. Keep şirketi from sigorta şirketi, then add n and -e.

  4. Complete: There is news from our companies. Use plural + our + from.

    Show answer or example answer

    şirketlerimizden

şirketlerimizden: the news comes from several companies belonging to us. The order is şirket + ler + imiz + den; the final z of the possessive ending allows -den.
