Use sonuç for a result, outcome or consequence. This lesson follows a result from a comparison to a report, showing how its role in the sentence changes the ending.

The idea

The stem alternates between sonuç and sonuc-: sonucu, sonuca, sonucun, but sonuçta, sonuçtan and sonuçlar. In sonuca ulaşmak, the dative marks the result reached. Possession adds another layer: karşılaştırmanın sonucu names the result of the comparison; as a definite object it becomes karşılaştırmanın sonucunu. The final -u in that object form follows the linking n. With a plural first, the stem stays unchanged: sonuçlarımız.

Watch out

Do not treat every sonucu as a finished object form. In Sonucu açıkladık, it means “we announced the result”; in karşılaştırmanın sonucu, it marks the relationship to the comparison. To announce that result, say Karşılaştırmanın sonucunu açıkladık. Also distinguish sonuçtan from sonucundan: the latter can mean “from its result”.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with “the result” as a definite object: we will announce it tomorrow.

    sonucu

sonucu: we will announce a particular result, so the noun is a definite object. The vowel of -u also triggers the change from ç to c.

  2. Complete with “result”: we cannot make a firm judgement based on this result.

    sonuçtan

sonuçtan: the result is the basis from which a judgement might be drawn. There is no possessor here; ç stays before the consonant of -tan.

  3. Complete with “result”: we wrote the result of the comparison in the report.

    sonucunu

sonucunu: karşılaştırmanın already requires a possessive ending on the result. Writing that result in the report adds the accusative after linking n: sonuc-u-n-u.

  4. Complete with “our results”, plural: they are consistent with the earlier measurements.

    sonuçlarımız

sonuçlarımız: bizim identifies us as the possessors, and the prompt asks for several results. Plural -lar comes before -ımız; its vowel explains why this is not sonuçlarumuz.

Use it today

Describe an imaginary comparison in three sentences: state the result, say what conclusion you reached, and report the comparison’s result as an object. Use sonuç, sonuca and karşılaştırmanın sonucunu.
