A salary can arrive in an account, include travel expenses or provide money to save. Use maaş in these situations while keeping track of whose salary it is and what role it plays in the sentence.

The idea

Maaş keeps both letters a and its final ş: maaşa, maaşı, maaşlar. In Maaşı biliyorum, maaşı marks a specific salary as the object; in Onun maaşı yüksek, it means his or her salary. Once that possessed noun becomes the object, use onun maaşını. The table separates the forms; the suffix lessons explain their wider use.

Watch out

Do not choose the last ending from the bare noun after adding possession. Compare maaştan with maaşımdan: the ablative now follows m, so it begins with d. Likewise, onun maaşına retains the possessive ending and adds n before the dative; bare maaşa does not mean “to his/her salary”.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete: There is a small increase in this salary. Use the locative.

    maaşta

maaşta: the increase is in this salary, so the sentence needs a locative. The final ş gives t, and the last vowel a selects -ta.

  2. Complete with “from my salary”: I set aside some money every month.

    maaşımdan

maaşımdan: the money comes from the speaker’s own salary. Keep maaşım for “my salary” before adding -dan to identify the source.

  3. Complete: I do not know his or her salary. Keep the possessor and mark the object.

    Show answer or example answer

    maaşını

maaşını: onun identifies the owner, while bilmiyorum takes the salary as its object. Build maaşı + n + ı to express both roles.

  4. Complete with “our salaries”: They are paid on the same day.

    maaşlarımız

maaşlarımız: several salaries belong to us, so -lar precedes -ımız. The completed noun is the subject of yatıyor and needs no accusative ending.

Use it today

Invent a salary and write three sentences: when it arrives, what is included in it, and how much you save from it. Then change “my salary” to “his/her salary” and check each ending.
