You will build negative future forms such as gelmeyeceğim and say what will not happen.

The idea

To say what will not happen, add the negative -me (-ma after a back vowel) to the verb stem, then the future -yecek (-yacak), then the person ending: gelmeyecek, yapmayacak. The y stands between the negative and the future, and the vowel of the future follows the vowel of -me/-ma. Before an ending that starts with a vowel (-im, -iz) the final k becomes ğ: gelmeyeceğim, yapmayacağız. Before -sin, -siniz and -ler/-lar it stays k.

Watch out

Do not drop the y and do not borrow the present tense: gelmeceğim and gelmiyeceğim are wrong, gelmeyeceğim is right. Gelmiyorum means that you are not coming at the moment, while gelmeyeceğim means that you will not come.

Try it yourself

  1. Make the negative future of gel (come) for ben: I will not come.

    Show answer or example answer

    gelmeyeceğim

gelmeyeceğim: the stem gel has the front vowel e, so -me and -yecek; -im starts with a vowel, so the k becomes ğ.

  2. Make the negative future of yap (do, make) for biz: we will not do it.

    Show answer or example answer

    yapmayacağız

yapmayacağız: the back vowel a gives -ma and then -yacak; -iz starts with a vowel, so the k becomes ğ.

  3. Make the negative future of oku (read) for o: he or she will not read.

    Show answer or example answer

    okumayacak

okumayacak: oku ends in the back vowel u, so -ma; the third person has no ending after -yacak, so the k stays.

  4. Make the negative future of git (go) for sen: you will not go.

    Show answer or example answer

    gitmeyeceksin

gitmeyeceksin: git does not soften because -me starts with a consonant, and -sin starts with a consonant, so the k stays.

Use it today

Write four sentences about what you will not do this weekend. In each one mark -me/-ma, then check that the y is there and whether the k became ğ.
