You will add -du to the present continuous and say what was going on at a moment in the past.
The idea
The past continuous is the present continuous (-yor) plus -du: geliyor becomes geliyordu. Directly after -yor, the past suffix is -du, following its o; after intervening plural -lar, it is -dı: geliyorlardı. The person endings are the past ones: geliyordum, geliyordun, geliyordu, geliyorduk, geliyordunuz, geliyorlardı. It describes an action in progress, or repeated, around a past moment: O sırada yemek yapıyordum.
| Person | Present continuous | Past continuous |

| sen | geliyorsun | geliyordun |
| o | geliyor | geliyordu |
| biz | geliyoruz | geliyorduk |
| siz | geliyorsunuz | geliyordunuz |
| onlar | geliyorlar | geliyorlardı |
Examples
- Dün akşam ben yemek yapıyordum.Yesterday evening I was cooking. The pronoun ben may be dropped, because -m already means I: Dün akşam yemek yapıyordum. From yapıyorum (I am cooking) to yapıyordum (I was cooking), -du comes in before the person ending.

Watch out
Do not use -yordu for one finished event: Dün sinemaya gittim reports that the trip happened, while Dün sinemaya gidiyordum says you were on your way or used to go. Put the person ending last: geliyordum, not geliyorumdu. The table puts plural -lar before -dı. Bekliyordular also occurs; with explicit onlar, bekliyordu is also correct.
