A plan can be future from a past viewpoint. Here you will build the forms for “was going to”, including negatives and questions. The form alone does not prove that the plan failed.

The idea

Choose -ecekti after e, i, ö, ü and -acaktı after a, ı, o, u in the stem. After a vowel, insert y: bekleyecekti, okuyacaktı. Add past-type person endings: gelecektim, gelecektin, gelecekti, gelecektik, gelecektiniz. For “they”, both geleceklerdi and gelecektiler occur. Negation comes before the future: gelmeyecektik. In a neutral yes/no question, write the particle separately and attach past and person to it: gelecek miydin?, bakacak mıydınız?. The table covers both vowel series.

Watch out

Keep the future suffix’s k before -ti or -tı: gelecektim, unlike geleceğim. In gidecektim, the stem’s t becomes d before the future vowel, but the suffix’s k stays. These are two different positions in the word.

Try it yourself

  1. Write “I was going to go” as one word.

    gidecektim

gidecektim: git- becomes gid- before -ecek; -ti places the intention in the past, and final -m identifies the speaker. The result does not say “I went”.

  2. Write “you were going to read”, addressing several people or one person politely.

    okuyacaktınız

okuyacaktınız: the stem oku- ends in a vowel, so y separates it from -acak. After -tı, -nız marks several addressees or one politely addressed person.

  3. Write “we were not going to come” as one word.

    Show answer or example answer

    gelmeyecektik

gelmeyecektik: the negative -me follows gel- before the future, giving gelmeyecek-; the final -k after -ti identifies “we”, not “I”.

  4. Ask “Were you going to go?” using the singular familiar “you”.

    gidecek miydin

gidecek miydin?: the future ends in e, so the separate particle is mi. Its past form is miydi, and -n identifies the person being asked.

Use it today

Write an earlier plan for yourself, a negative plan for a group, and a question about someone’s plan. Add a separate sentence saying what actually happened.
