Recognising a word is a useful guess, not proof of its meaning. You will use the situation to check four misleading similarities. The comparison language matters: a word can help a French reader but mislead someone relying on English.
The idea
Check the language, the setting and the whole phrase before translating. Turkish pasta is cake; English “pasta”, or Italian “pasta” in a spaghetti dish, is makarna. Magazin often concerns celebrities and entertainment: magazin haberleri. For a magazine in general, use dergi; French “magasin” means a shop, mağaza. Şef can be a team leader as well as a head cook, so büro şefi is an office manager. Patron means boss; an English “patron” who buys a restaurant meal is a müşteri.
Examples
- Bugün çikolatalı pasta yapıyoruz. We are making chocolate cake today.
- Akşam makarna pişireceğiz.We will cook pasta this evening.
- Bu dergi her ay çıkıyor. This magazine comes out every month.
- Magazin haberleri ünlülerin özel hayatını anlatıyor. The celebrity news covers the private lives of famous people.
- Büro şefleri yarın toplantıya katılacak. The office managers will attend the meeting tomorrow.
- Aşçılar çorbaya biraz tuz ekliyor. The cooks are adding a little salt to the soup.
- Patronlar yeni çalışanlar arıyor. The bosses are looking for new employees.
- Müşteriler hesabı kartla ödedi. The customers paid the bill by card.

Watch out
Do not turn these contrasts into “the two words never overlap”. A şef may work in a kitchen, and magazin can also name a type of publication. The mistake is assuming a kitchen from şef alone, or using magazin for every magazine without checking its subject.
Try it yourself
Choose the word: We blew out the candles, then cut some ___. Cake or pasta?
Show answer or example answer
pasta
pasta: candles and cutting point to a celebration cake. Makarna would change the food to pasta and does not fit this scene.
Choose the general word for a magazine: this monthly science publication is a ___.
Show answer or example answer
dergi
dergi: the clue is a monthly science publication. This is a publication type; nothing in the prompt suggests celebrity or entertainment coverage.
Choose the word for the person who leads the office team: şef or aşçı.
Show answer or example answer
şef
şef: the person leads an office team. Aşçı names a cook, and the task gives no cooking role; the workplace resolves the ambiguity.
English “patron” here means someone who comes to a restaurant to eat. Choose müşteri or patron.
Show answer or example answer
müşteri
müşteri: the person is there to buy a meal. Calling that person patron would describe a boss instead of the customer role specified here.

Write a two-sentence restaurant scene with pasta and makarna, then an office scene with şef. For each, explain which detail prevents the misleading translation. Finally, contrast the restaurant’s patron and müşteri.
