If you know French, you may look for a Turkish equivalent of le or la before every noun. Use these comparisons to stop assigning gender to Turkish words.

The idea

Turkish nouns have no grammatical gender, and adjectives do not change for masculine or feminine nouns. French un cahier and une revue become bir defter and bir dergi: the same bir can introduce either. With an adjective, use yeni bir dergi. There is no separate definite article like le or la: in the context shown, Dergi yeni means La revue est neuve. In kahve içiyorum, the bare noun names what you are drinking; French uses du café. Context and case also matter, so this is not a rule for deleting every French article.

Examples

  • Masada bir defter var. There is a notebook on the table.
  • Çantada bir dergi var. There is a magazine in the bag.
  • Bugün kahve içiyorum.I am drinking coffee today.
  • Defter yeni. The notebook is new.
  • Dergi yeni. The magazine is new.
  • Yeni bir defter arıyorum.I am looking for a new notebook.
  • Yeni bir dergi arıyorum.I am looking for a new magazine.

Watch out

Do not automatically turn French du into bir. Kahve içiyorum describes drinking coffee; bir kahve can mean a coffee, a serving. Likewise, the French contrast neuf/neuve does not require two forms of yeni.

Try it yourself

  1. French un cahier / une revue: fill both blanks with the same Turkish word: ___ defter / ___ dergi. Write it once.

    Show answer or example answer

    bir

bir: un introduces a masculine French noun and une a feminine one, but defter and dergi do not belong to those gender classes. One form fits both blanks.

  2. French Je bois du café: complete ___ içiyorum with the Turkish noun for coffee, without a quantity word.

    Show answer or example answer

    kahve

kahve: the prompt asks for the drink, with no serving counted. Adding bir would introduce a unit that the French partitive does not require.

  3. French Le cahier est neuf / La revue est neuve: complete Defter ___ / Dergi ___ with the same adjective. Write it once.

    Show answer or example answer

    yeni

yeni: both sentences describe the condition of an object. French changes neuf to neuve; the Turkish adjective keeps the same spelling.

  4. Translate une revue neuve using the ordinary order adjective + bir + noun.

    yeni bir dergi

yeni bir dergi: yeni describes the magazine, bir introduces it, and dergi names it. This gives the requested adjective–indefinite word–noun order.

Use it today

Describe a new notebook and a new magazine, then say that you are drinking coffee. Compare your Turkish with French and circle only the words that actually express gender in French.
