English often puts small words before a noun: “in my bag”, “from our houses”. Turkish can attach those meanings after the noun. Read for meaning units, not matching spaces.

The idea

In evlerimizden, start with ev (house), then read -ler (plural), -imiz (our) and -den (from): “from our houses”. English puts “from our” first; Turkish adds these meanings after the noun. The whole word is a phrase, not a complete statement. By contrast, evdeyim means “I am at home”: ev + -de + -yim, with the last part marking the speaker. The related suffix pages explain the forms; the harmony page explains their vowels.

Watch out

Do not turn every English space into a Turkish space, or every English “I” into ben. Write çantamda as one word. Evdeyim already identifies the speaker; ben evdeyim is also correct, often with extra emphasis on who is at home.

Try it yourself

  1. Write “in my bag” as one word, starting from çanta.

    Show answer or example answer

    çantamda

çantamda: -m makes the bag mine, and -da locates something inside it. Leaving out -m would lose “my”.

  2. Write “from our houses” as one word, starting from ev.

    Show answer or example answer

    evlerimizden

evlerimizden: several houses belong to us, so both -ler and -imiz are needed before the ending that expresses “from”.

  3. Write “I am at home” as one word, without a separate pronoun.

    Show answer or example answer

    evdeyim

evdeyim: the final -yim supplies “I am”; evde alone only gives the location. The y connects the ending after a vowel.

  4. Write “our books” as one word, starting from kitap.

    Show answer or example answer

    kitaplarımız

kitaplarımız: -lar counts multiple books and -ımız identifies their owners. The p stays because the next sound is l, not a vowel.
