Use Ukrainian sounds as starting points, then keep the Turkish spelling. This written lesson has no attached recording; the comparisons are pronunciation aids, not a Cyrillic transcription system.

The idea

Turkish ç, ş, j and y are close to Ukrainian ч, ш, ж and й. Turkish c represents the joined sound дж, not Ukrainian с; g in gaz is close to ґ, not г. Dotted i is close to Ukrainian і. For dotless ı, keep the lips unrounded and the tongue farther back than for i: Ukrainian и is not an exact match. For ö and ü, keep the tongue forward and round the lips; start from e for ö and i for ü. They are single vowels, not Ukrainian йо or ю. In dağ, ğ lengthens the preceding vowel in standard pronunciation; do not insert a ґ or г sound. Keep the letter in writing. Capital pairs are I–ı and İ–i.

  • Biz bugün süt içiyoruz. We are drinking milk today.

Watch out

The look of c can tempt a Ukrainian reader to say с: cam means glass, while çam means pine. Dots also distinguish words: kır is countryside and kir is dirt. Do not replace Turkish letters with similar-looking Cyrillic characters when typing.

Try it yourself

  1. Write the word meaning glass: cam or çam.

    Show answer or example answer

    cam

cam: the clue asks for glass, whose first sound is дж. Adding the cedilla gives çam, a pine tree, so it changes the meaning.

  2. Write IŞIK (light) in lowercase.

    Show answer or example answer

    ışık

ışık: both vowels in IŞIK are capital dotless I. Lowercasing keeps them dotless; the middle consonant remains ş.

  3. Write the word meaning lake: gol or göl.

    Show answer or example answer

    göl

göl: the requested meaning is lake. Its vowel is front and rounded; gol means a goal in sport and cannot replace it.

  4. Complete da_ to mean mountain. Write the whole word.

    Show answer or example answer

    dağ

dağ: the missing letter is ğ. The long vowel in pronunciation does not remove this letter from the written word for a mountain.

Use it today

Compare cam/çam, kır/kir and göl/gül. Circle the letter that changes, read the words slowly, then write them from memory. Continue with vowel harmony and the plural suffix.
