If you know Polish cases, you already look at word endings for meaning. Here you will separate number, possession and case inside one Turkish noun instead of treating its ending as one block.

The idea

Compare Polish “w naszych torbach” with çantalarımızda: çanta + -lar + -ımız + -da. In Polish, the ending of “torbach” marks both plural and locative; Turkish gives plural, “our” and location separate places, in that order. Build the noun first and add the case after the possessive suffix. The linked suffix pages cover the other forms.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Turkish voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Do not carry Polish agreement into a Turkish adjective before a noun. In Polish “w naszych nowych torbach”, “nowych” changes with the noun; in yeni çantalarımızda, yeni stays unchanged. Put the number, possession and case on the noun.

Try it yourself

  1. Starting from çanta, write “in our bags” as one word.

    Show answer or example answer

    çantalarımızda

çantalarımızda: -lar gives several bags and -ımız makes them ours. The last vowel is now ı and the final consonant is voiced z, so location takes -da.

  2. Starting from oda, write “from our rooms” as one word.

    Show answer or example answer

    odalarımızdan

odalarımızdan: the rooms are the starting point of the movement, so the last suffix is -dan. Ending at odalarımız would say only “our rooms”, without “from”.

  3. Complete “We are opening our new notebooks”. Use defter with the necessary suffixes.

    Show answer or example answer

    defterlerimizi

defterlerimizi: the notebooks belong to us and are the definite object of opening. The final -i marks that object after -imiz; defterlerimiz alone only says “our notebooks”.

  4. Use yeni and çanta to write “in our new bags”.

    Show answer or example answer

    yeni çantalarımızda

yeni çantalarımızda: yeni describes the bags but does not agree with them in number or case. The noun already carries “our”, plural and location, so no ending is added to the adjective.
