A new routine can feel strange before it becomes familiar. Use alışmak to describe that change, whether you are adapting to a job, a sound or getting up early. The table gives all six persons.
The idea
The thing you get used to takes the dative: yeni işe alışmak. For an activity, use a verbal noun with the dative: erken kalkmaya alışmak. Alışıyorum describes adjustment in progress; alıştım says you have got used to it. The aorist alışırım can describe a general tendency. Keep ş in the stem: alıştım has t after ş, while the future ending has ğ in alışacağım and alışacağız.
| Person | Present continuous | Past | Future | Aorist | Negative present continuous |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben | alışıyorum | alıştım | alışacağım | alışırım | alışmıyorum |
| sen | alışıyorsun | alıştın | alışacaksın | alışırsın | alışmıyorsun |
| o | alışıyor | alıştı | alışacak | alışır | alışmıyor |
| biz | alışıyoruz | alıştık | alışacağız | alışırız | alışmıyoruz |
| siz | alışıyorsunuz | alıştınız | alışacaksınız | alışırsınız | alışmıyorsunuz |

Watch out
Do not carry over a direct object from “like”: say yeni işe alıştım, not yeni işi alıştım. Getting used to something does not necessarily mean liking it. For “not yet”, henüz alışmadım says that adjustment has not happened yet; alışmıyorum describes a process that is not taking place.
Try it yourself
Complete the whole noun: I am getting used to the new job.
Show answer or example answer
işe
işe: the new job is what you are adapting to, so iş takes -e. İşi would mark a direct object instead.
Turn “get up” into “to getting up”: we have got used to getting up early.
Show answer or example answer
kalkmaya
kalkmaya: remove -mak, add the verbal-noun ending -ma, then -ya. The resulting word names the activity you have become used to.
Use the first-person singular past: I have finally got used to this sound.
Show answer or example answer
alıştım
alıştım: sonunda presents adjustment as achieved. The past ending starts with t after ş, and final m identifies the speaker.
Use the negative first-person singular past: I have not got used to this routine yet.

alışmadım
alışmadım: henüz leaves the change open for the future. Negation comes before the past ending, so the d follows the vowel of -ma, not the stem’s ş.
