Use çağırmak when you want someone to come, whether you call them into the kitchen or invite them for breakfast. The destination helps the listener understand which meaning you intend.

The idea

The person called is the object: beni çağır means call me over. A specified person takes the accusative, while the place or occasion takes the dative: komşuları kahvaltıya çağırmak. Keep the whole stem çağır- in çağırıyorum, çağırdım and çağırırım. In çağıracağım and çağıracağız, the future ending’s k becomes ğ. The table shows plural endings for onlar; a singular verb is also possible with a plural human subject.

Watch out

English call can mean telephone, but çağırmak does not by itself say that you used a phone. Use aramak for phoning. You can phone someone and then invite them: telefonla aramak and eve çağırmak describe different parts of that situation.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete in the present continuous: I am calling the children into the kitchen now.

    Show answer or example answer

    çağırıyorum

çağırıyorum: ben requires the first-person form, and şimdi places the action in progress. The stem keeps its dotless ı before -ıyor.

  2. Complete in the future: We will invite the neighbours for breakfast tomorrow.

    Show answer or example answer

    çağıracağız

çağıracağız: biz names the inviting group. The future form ends in -acağız; its k softens before the vowel of the first-person plural ending.

  3. Choose the pronoun meaning me: The teacher invited me to the meeting.

    Show answer or example answer

    beni

beni: I am the person invited, so the object form is needed. Bana means to me; here the destination is already expressed by toplantıya.

  4. Choose the verb for phoning: My father phoned my aunt yesterday.

    Show answer or example answer

    aradı

aradı: the prompt asks for a phone call. Çağırdı would say that he called her over or invited her, rather than simply describing the telephone conversation.

Use it today

Write a breakfast invitation and a request to call someone into a room. Underline the invited person and the destination. Then write a separate sentence about phoning someone; continue with tanımak next.
