Use dağıtmak to hand things out to several people, or to describe leaving things in disorder. You will name the item and its recipients, then choose a form for now, yesterday or tomorrow.
The idea
The stem dağıt- keeps its t: dağıtıyorum, dağıttım, dağıtacağım, dağıtırım. In the past, the stem’s t meets the ending’s t. A specific item takes the accusative and the recipient takes the dative: kalemleri öğrencilere dağıtmak. A general object can stay unmarked: yemek dağıtmak. The negative present is dağıtmıyorum. The table shows plural endings with onlar; a singular verb is also possible with a plural human subject.
| Subject | Present continuous | Past | Future | Aorist |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben | dağıtıyorum | dağıttım | dağıtacağım | dağıtırım |
| sen | dağıtıyorsun | dağıttın | dağıtacaksın | dağıtırsın |
| o | dağıtıyor | dağıttı | dağıtacak | dağıtır |
| biz | dağıtıyoruz | dağıttık | dağıtacağız | dağıtırız |
| siz | dağıtıyorsunuz | dağıttınız | dağıtacaksınız | dağıtırsınız |
| onlar | dağıtıyorlar | dağıttılar | dağıtacaklar | dağıtırlar |

Watch out
Do not translate every use as “distribute”: odayı dağıtmak means to make a mess of the room, and oyuncakları etrafa dağıtmak means to scatter toys around. In a distribution, çocuklara names the recipients; çocukları dağıtmak instead makes the children the object and can mean dispersing them.
Try it yourself
Dün kartları ___. (dağıtmak, biz) Fill the gap with the past form: we dealt the cards yesterday.
Show answer or example answer
dağıttık
dağıttık: the event happened yesterday and the subject is “we”. Combine dağıt- with past -tı and -k. Both instances of t remain; dağıttım would describe only the speaker.
Yarın broşürleri ___. (dağıtmak, biz) Use the future: we will hand out the brochures tomorrow.

dağıtacağız
dağıtacağız: the distribution is planned for tomorrow. The future’s k becomes ğ before the vowel of the “we” ending, whereas the stem’s t stays unchanged.
Kalemleri ___ dağıtıyorum. (çocuklar) Add the ending: I am handing out the pencils to the children.

çocuklara
çocuklara: the pencils are the things being handed out; the children receive them. Add dative -a to çocuklar. Accusative çocukları would give the children the wrong role here.
Lütfen odayı ___. (dağıtmak, sen, olumsuz emir) Ask one person not to make a mess of the room.
Show answer or example answer
dağıtma
dağıtma: this is a request to one person to avoid making a mess. The negative command ends in -ma; plain dağıt would tell the person to do the opposite.

Plan a small event: say what you will hand out and to whom. Add a sentence about what you handed out yesterday and ask someone not to make a mess of the room. Then practise counting with saymak.
