You will conjugate pişirmek in the present, past and future and tell cooking something apart from food that cooks by itself.

The idea

Pişirmek is built from pişmek (to be cooked, to get done) plus the causative -ir-: piş-ir-mek, to make cook. The stem pişir- ends in a consonant, so nothing drops and no buffer is needed: pişiriyorum, pişirdim, and in the future pişireceğim, where k softens to ğ before a vowel. The cook is the subject and the food is the object: yemek pişiriyorum; a particular dish takes the accusative (balığı pişirdim).

Watch out

Do not put the food in the subject slot with pişirmek. Pilav pişiriyor says the rice is cooking something; the rice cooking by itself is Pilav pişiyor. And pişiyorum does not mean I am cooking: it means I myself am being cooked, as in a joke about the heat.

Try it yourself

  1. Give the present-tense form of pişirmek for ben (I): am cooking.

    Show answer or example answer

    pişiriyorum

pişiriyorum: the stem pişir- ends in the consonant r, so nothing drops before -iyor, and -um follows the o of -yor for ben.

  2. Complete with the present tense of pişmek (to cook by itself): The rice is cooking on a low heat.

    Show answer or example answer

    pişiyor

pişiyor: pişmek has no -ir-; the rice is the subject and the consonant stem piş- simply takes -iyor.

  3. Give the future form of pişirmek for biz (we): will cook.

    Show answer or example answer

    pişireceğiz

pişireceğiz: the stem ends in a consonant, so no buffer y appears; the front vowel gives -ecek, and k softens to ğ before -iz.

  4. Give the past form of pişirmek for onlar (they): cooked.

    Show answer or example answer

    pişirdiler

pişirdiler: r is voiced, so the past ending is -di, and -ler marks the plural subject onlar.

Use it today

Write three sentences: a person cooking a named dish in the present, the same person in the past, and a sentence with the food as subject using pişmek. Underline the stem of each verb.
