Use anlatmak to explain a plan or tell a story. You will identify the listener and the content, then choose a form for now, yesterday, tomorrow or a habit.
The idea
The listener takes the dative: bana, sana, bize. Specific content takes the accusative, as in Bana planı anlat; an unspecified story can stay bare: masal anlatmak. The stem anlat- keeps its t: anlatıyorum, anlattım, anlatacağım. Use anlatırım for a habit and anlatmıyorum for a present negative. The bare imperative is anlat; anlatır mısın? makes a request, with mısın written separately.
| Person | Present continuous | Past | Future | Habitual | Negative present |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben | anlatıyorum | anlattım | anlatacağım | anlatırım | anlatmıyorum |
| sen | anlatıyorsun | anlattın | anlatacaksın | anlatırsın | anlatmıyorsun |
| o | anlatıyor | anlattı | anlatacak | anlatır | anlatmıyor |
| biz | anlatıyoruz | anlattık | anlatacağız | anlatırız | anlatmıyoruz |
| siz | anlatıyorsunuz | anlattınız | anlatacaksınız | anlatırsınız | anlatmıyorsunuz |
| onlar | anlatıyorlar | anlattılar | anlatacaklar | anlatırlar | anlatmıyorlar |

Watch out
Anlattım means I told or explained; anladım means I understood. If you did not understand the speaker, say Anlamadım. Anlatmadım instead says that you did not do the telling or explaining.
