You will conjugate kalmak (to stay, to remain) in the present continuous, past and future and say where someone stays.

The idea

The stem kal- is regular, but its vowel is the back vowel a, so every ending takes its back shape: kalıyorum, kaldım, kalacağım. The place where you stay takes the locative: evde kalıyorum, otelde kaldık. The verb also means to be left over: iki elma kaldı.

Watch out

Do not copy the front-vowel endings of gelmek: kaliyorum and kalecek are wrong. After a the endings are -ıyor and -acak, so it is kalıyorum and kalacağım, with the dotless ı and the k turning into ğ before a vowel.

Try it yourself

  1. Future tense: I will stay here tomorrow.

    Show answer or example answer

    kalacağım

kalacağım: the last vowel of kal- is a, so the future suffix is -acak. Its final k becomes ğ before -ım.

  2. Past tense: We stayed in a hotel last night.

    Show answer or example answer

    kaldık

kaldık: the past -dı has the dotless ı after a, and -k is the ending for "we".

  3. Present continuous: Where are you (all) staying now?

    Show answer or example answer

    kalıyorsunuz

kalıyorsunuz: the back vowel a gives -ıyor, and -sunuz is the ending for "you (all)".

  4. Negative past: Ali did not stay at school yesterday.

    Show answer or example answer

    kalmadı

kalmadı: the negative -ma- sits between the stem and the past -dı; the third person has no person ending.
