You will tell a person something, choose the right ending for the listener and for the thing said, and use söylemek in the present, past and future.

The idea

Söylemek has two partners. The thing said is its object: a definite one takes -i (doğruyu), a general one stays bare (yalan, şarkı). The person who hears it takes -e/-a: Ali'ye, bana. In the present the final e of söyle- drops and the ending rounds: söylüyorum; the past and future keep the stem: söyledim, söyleyeceğim.

Examples

  • Ali'ye yarın söyleyeceğim.I will tell Ali tomorrow. The listener takes -e, with a buffer y after a vowel: Ali'ye. The thing said can be left out when it is clear, and so can ben.
  • Annem bana her zaman doğruyu söylüyor. My mother always tells me the truth.Bana is the listener and doğruyu is the thing said: doğru takes -yu after its vowel. In söylüyor the final e of söyle- has dropped and the ending is rounded.
  • Babam dün akşam bize her şeyi söyledi. My father told us everything last night. Her şey is written apart and the ending goes on the second word: her şeyi. The past söyledi keeps the e of the stem.
  • Ne söyledin? What did you say?Ne asks for the thing said and takes no ending here. To ask who heard it, use kime: Kime söyledin?
  • Sana yalan söylemedim.I did not lie to you.Yalan söylemek is a fixed phrase for lying. Yalan has no ending because no particular lie is meant, and -me- before -di makes the verb negative.
  • Çocuklar şarkı söylüyor. The children are singing.Şarkı söylemek is the usual way to say sing, and şarkı stays bare. A plural subject like çocuklar usually keeps the verb singular.
  • söylemedimI did not saysöylemedi-medi / -madı: the negative pastmPast person endings: -m, -n, -k, -niz, -ler
  • söyleyeceğizwe will saysöyleyeceğ-ecek / -acak: will, going toiz-im / -sin / -iz / -siniz: I am, you are, we are

Watch out

Do not mark the listener with ile as you would with konuşmak: say Ali'ye söyledim, not Ali ile söyledim. And do not keep the e in the present: söylüyorum, not söyleyiyorum.

Try it yourself

  1. Add the ending for the person told: I told Ali.

    Show answer or example answer

    Ali'ye

Ali'ye: the listener takes the dative, and since Ali ends in the front vowel i, the ending is -e with a buffer y between the two vowels.

  2. Write the present continuous of söylemek for ben: I am saying.

    Show answer or example answer

    söylüyorum

söylüyorum: the final e of söyle- drops before -yor, the ending rounds to -üyor after ö, and -um marks ben.

  3. Write the future of söylemek for biz: we will say.

    Show answer or example answer

    söyleyeceğiz

söyleyeceğiz: the stem ends in a vowel, so y joins it to -ecek, and before the vowel of -iz the k softens to ğ.

  4. Write the negative present continuous of söylemek for o: he or she is not saying.

    Show answer or example answer

    söylemiyor

söylemiyor: the negative -mi- sits between the stem and -yor, and the third person has no personal ending.

Use it today

Write three sentences in which you tell a friend, a relative and a teacher something: one in the present, one in the past, one in the future. Underline the ending on each listener.
