Use varmak when the journey reaches its endpoint. You can report an arrival, predict when you will get somewhere or describe reaching a conclusion. The table gives affirmative forms for all six persons.

The idea

The destination takes the dative: istasyona varmak, köye varmak. The stem stays var-: varıyorum, vardım. Learn the aorist varır, not varar, even though the stem has one syllable. The future is varacağım for “I” and varacağız for “we”; the ending’s k becomes ğ before a vowel. The same destination pattern appears in sonuca varmak, “reach a conclusion”. Useful negatives are varmadım and varmayacağım; write the question separately: vardın mı?

Watch out

An arrival location still takes the dative: otele vardık, not otelde vardık. Compare otelde kaldık, “we stayed at the hotel”, where the locative fits. Also distinguish the arrival verb from var, “there is”: Otelde bir havuz var describes the existence of a pool, not an arrival.

Try it yourself

  1. Put istasyon (station) in the dative to mark the destination.

    Show answer or example answer

    istasyona

istasyona: the station is the endpoint of the train’s journey. The final vowel of istasyon selects -a; istasyonda would mean “at the station”.

  2. Complete with the third-person singular aorist of varmak.

    Show answer or example answer

    varır

varır: her sabah presents a repeated arrival. This verb takes -ır in the aorist, and the third-person singular needs no additional person ending.

  3. Use the first-person singular future of varmak.

    Show answer or example answer

    varacağım

varacağım: yarın places the arrival tomorrow, and the prompt asks for “I”. Adding -ım to varacak changes the ending’s k to ğ.

  4. Use the negative past of varmak with “we”: no conclusion yet.

    Show answer or example answer

    varmadık

varmadık: henüz and the negative say that no conclusion has been reached yet. The parts are var- + -ma + -dı + -k; the last part marks “we”.

Use it today

Write when a bus usually arrives, when you arrived yesterday and when you will arrive tomorrow. Then add one sentence about a conclusion you have not reached yet. Mark each destination and check the tense.
