Use vazgeçmek when someone abandons an idea or stops pursuing an activity. It can also describe deciding not to do something before it starts; it does not necessarily mean failing.

The idea

The thing you give up takes the ablative: bu plandan vazgeçmek. For an action, use an infinitive with the ablative: beklemekten vazgeçmek. Write the verb as one word. Its ç stays in vazgeçiyorum and vazgeçeceğim; the past is vazgeçtim. The future ending, rather than the stem, has ğ in vazgeçeceğim. The table gives forms with explicit plural agreement for onlar; singular verb forms are also possible with this human plural subject.

Watch out

Do not transfer an accusative object pattern here: use bu plandan, not bu planı, with vazgeçmek. A pause alone is not abandonment: Yürümekten vazgeçmedim; sadece biraz dinlendim says that the speaker rested but still intended to walk.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete the sentence: I gave up on this plan. Write the whole form of plan.

    Show answer or example answer

    plandan

plandan: the plan is what was abandoned, so it needs the ablative. The final vowel of plan gives -dan; this is not a direct object in the accusative.

  2. I found a cheaper room and gave up staying at the hotel. Put kalmak in the blank.

    Show answer or example answer

    kalmaktan

kalmaktan: finding a cheaper room changed the decision about staying at the hotel. Keep the infinitive kalmak and add -tan after its final k.

  3. I continued walking. Complete with the negative past of vazgeçmek for ben.

    Show answer or example answer

    vazgeçmedim

vazgeçmedim: continuing to walk means the speaker did not give up. The negative -me- comes before the past ending, giving -medi-, and final -m identifies the speaker.

  4. Address several friends: do not give up trying. Use the negative command of vazgeçmek for siz.

    Show answer or example answer

    vazgeçmeyin

vazgeçmeyin: the instruction is addressed to several friends and asks them not to stop trying. The negative command uses -me- and the plural address ending, with y between the vowels.

Use it today

Write one sentence about a plan you abandoned and one about an activity you refuse to give up. Mark the ablative complement, then turn the second sentence into encouragement addressed to a group.
