Go beyond calling someone nice. These twelve adjectives let you describe trust, effort, patience and sociability, then explain what behaviour supports your choice.

The idea

Use character adjectives for a person’s usual behaviour: dürüst means honest, güvenilir means reliable, and çalışkan means hardworking. Genellikle (usually) makes that pattern explicit; bugün (today) limits an observation to one day. Give a reason with çünkü: Ada güvenilir çünkü sözünü tutar. You can introduce your judgement with bence (in my opinion).

Watch out

Sessiz describes someone who says little or is not speaking; çekingen describes someone who is shy or hesitant around others. A talkative person can be quiet today. Do not infer shyness from silence alone, or laziness from one tired afternoon. Cimri and tembel are negative judgements: explain the behaviour you mean.

Try it yourself

  1. Ada keeps her word. You can trust her. Choose: Ada ___. (güvenilir / cimri)

    Show answer or example answer

    güvenilir

güvenilir: Ada keeps her word, so other people can rely on her. The clue is about trust, not how she spends money.

  2. Bora never rushes when waiting. Choose: Bora ___. (sabırlı / sabırsız)

    Show answer or example answer

    sabırlı

sabırlı: Bora does not rush while waiting. Sabırsız would describe difficulty tolerating that wait, the opposite of the behaviour given.

  3. Derya usually talks a lot, but today she is not talking at all. Choose: Bugün ___. (sessiz / çekingen)

    Show answer or example answer

    sessiz

sessiz: the prompt tells us that Derya is not speaking today. It gives no evidence that she feels shy around people, so çekingen adds a claim we cannot make.

  4. Efe likes spending and sharing money. Choose: Efe ___. (cömert / cimri)

    Show answer or example answer

    cömert

cömert: sharing money willingly is the decisive clue. Spending money on oneself alone would not establish generosity; cimri conflicts with the sharing described.

Use it today

Invent two people. Give each a character adjective and a supporting action with çünkü. Then describe a day when one behaves differently, using genellikle, ama and bugün.
