At B2, choosing a register means shaping the whole message around its reader. Compare a request to a close friend with one to a new professional contact. The information stays the same; the relationship expressed by the wording changes.

The idea

Choose a consistent set: familiar sen, sana, görüşlerin, misin or respectful/plural siz, size, görüşleriniz, misiniz. With one recipient, siz can mark respectful distance; with several, it can simply be plural. The pronoun itself may be omitted, but the other forms still identify the addressee. Match the opening and closing to that relationship: Selam Deniz and Sevgiler suit the friendly model; Merhaba Deniz Hanım and Saygılarımla suit the more distant model. These are contextual choices, not a ranking of politeness. A question with bakabilir misin can be courteous between friends.

Watch out

Changing only the greeting leaves a mixed message. After choosing siz for a single reader, do not accidentally keep sana or uygunsan. Adding lütfen does not change the person ending. Nor does a short message automatically call for sen: the relationship matters more than the channel.

Try it yourself

  1. Address a new professional contact with siz. Replace only sana: Taslağı sana bu akşam göndereceğim.

    Show answer or example answer

    size

size addresses the new contact with respectful distance; sana would address that person familiarly. The sender and the promised delivery time do not change.

  2. You want the recipient’s own comments. Keep the address siz. Correct görüşlerini: Görüşlerini benimle paylaşabilir misiniz?

    Show answer or example answer

    görüşlerinizi

görüşlerinizi keeps the meaning “your comments” while making the possessor match siz. Changing the verb alone would leave the familiar possessive in place.

  3. Keep siz. Correct the ending bakabilir misin: Uygunsanız metne yarın bakabilir misin?

    Show answer or example answer

    bakabilir misiniz

bakabilir misiniz makes the request agree with the chosen respectful address. The ability question still softens the request; misiniz remains separate from the verb.

  4. For a first message to a professional contact, with no personal closeness, choose the more suitable closing: Saygılarımla or Sevgiler.

    Show answer or example answer

    Saygılarımla

Saygılarımla fits the stated first professional contact. Sevgiler would suggest a warmer relationship that this scenario has not established; it is not grammatically wrong.

Use it today

Write two 60–80-word messages asking someone to comment on a draft tomorrow: one to a close friend, one to a new professional contact. Keep the request and timing unchanged. Circle every form that refers to the reader, then check the greeting and closing against them.
