You sent a friend the wrong file and delayed their work. Build a short message that acknowledges the problem, expresses regret and says what you will do next. The model uses a familiar tone; one example shows polite address.

The idea

Give the apology its own sentence, then a brief explanation and a concrete repair. In Dosyaları karıştırdığım için özür dilerim, the part before için names what you did: “I am sorry for mixing up the files.” The person you apologise to takes senden or polite sizden: Senden özür dilerim. Keep this separate from sana in “I sent you”. End with an action and a time, then a closing suited to the reader.

Merhaba Deniz,

Sevgiler, Ece

Watch out

Özür dilerim ama sen de… (“I am sorry, but you also…”) can turn your apology into an accusation. Explain your own mistake without making the recipient defend themselves. Üzgünüm expresses regret, but on its own it leaves the reason and the next step unclear.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the word that links the apology to what you did: Dosyaları karıştırdığım ___ özür dilerim. (için / ama)

    Show answer or example answer

    için

için connects the mix-up with the apology: this is what you are apologising for. Ama means “but” and cannot link this unfinished clause in the same way.

  2. Complete the apology addressed to a friend: ___ özür dilerim. (Senden / Sana)

    Show answer or example answer

    Senden

senden identifies the person whose forgiveness you ask for. Sana fits a recipient in a sentence about sending something, but this apology expression uses the form meaning “from you”.

  3. You sent the wrong file. Choose the sentence that acknowledges your action without blaming the reader: Dosyaları karıştırdım. / Sen de beni uyarmadın.

    Show answer or example answer

    Dosyaları karıştırdım.

Dosyaları karıştırdım. states the writer’s own action. The alternative blames the reader for failing to warn them, which weakens the apology even though the sentence is grammatical.

  4. Choose the expression that gives a definite time for the repair: Doğru dosyayı ___ göndereceğim. (bu akşam / bir ara)

    Show answer or example answer

    bu akşam

bu akşam gives the reader a definite time to expect the corrected file. Bir ara means “sometime”; it leaves the promised repair open-ended.

Use it today

Write 60–80 words to a friend after sending the wrong file. Add a greeting, name the mistake and its effect, apologise, give one brief explanation and promise a specific repair time. Close warmly. Then underline the apology and circle the time: could your friend tell what happens next?
