Use に相違ない to state a confident inference: the speaker is convinced something must be true. It sounds formal and is common in writing or formal speech.
The idea
Attach に相違ない to a plain verb or い-adjective, including past and negative forms. Attach it directly to a noun or な-adjective without だ. に相違ありません is the polite ending.
| Form | Example |
|---|---|
| 動詞・普通形 | 行くに相違ありません |
| い形容詞 | 狭かったに相違ありません |
| な形容詞 | 重要に相違ありません |
| 名詞 | 犯人に相違ありません |
Examples
- 彼はこの町をよく知っているに相違ありません。He must know this town well.
- この資料は重要に相違ありません。This document must be important.
- あの人が犯人に相違ありません。That person must be the culprit.
- 彼女はその話をまだ聞いていないに相違ありません。She must not have heard the story yet.
- この道は昔から狭かったに相違ありません。This road must have been narrow for a long time.
- 鍵は机の上にあったに相違ありません。The key must have been on the desk.

Watch out
This is the speaker’s strong judgment, not proof of the fact. Unlike hearsay そうです, it does not itself report a source; it is also more formal than に違いない.
