Use this pattern when an action is possible in principle but circumstances, duty or conscience make it unacceptable.
The idea
Attach わけにはいかない to a dictionary-form verb: 行くわけにはいかない means “I cannot go” in the circumstances. The polite ending is わけにはいきません. With a negative verb, 行かないわけにはいかない means one cannot leave the action undone, so one must go.
| Form | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 行くわけにはいきません | Cannot go |
| 行かないわけにはいきません | Must go |
Examples

Watch out
This is not ordinary physical inability: 泳げない describes inability to swim. Nor is it simply a universal prohibition like 泳いではいけない; the reason depends on the speaker’s situation.
