A boat waits for calmer weather

The idea

「〜ことにしました」 marks the captain’s decision to delay. 「〜ので」 gives the reason the boat eventually leaves: the waves have calmed. Follow the change from strong wind to calmer seas.

• 朝あさ、港みなとの小ちいさな船ふねは、向むこうの島しまへ荷物にもつを運はこぶ予定よていでした。In the morning, a small boat in the harbor was scheduled to carry cargo to the island across the water.
• ところが、風かぜが強つよく、波なみも高たかくなってきました。However, the wind was strong and the waves were growing higher.
• 船長せんちょうは天気予報てんきよほうを確たしかめ、出発しゅっぱつを遅おくらせることにしました。The captain checked the weather forecast and decided to delay departure.
• 乗客じょうきゃくたちは残念ざんねんそうでしたが、港みなとの店みせで温あたたかいお茶ちゃを飲のみながら待まちました。The passengers looked disappointed, but waited while drinking warm tea at a harbor shop.
• 昼過ひるすぎに風かぜが弱よわまり、船長せんちょうはもう一度いちど海うみの様子ようすを見みました。After noon the wind weakened, and the captain checked the sea again.
• 波なみも落おち着ついたので、船ふねは予定よていより遅おくれて港みなとを出でました。As the waves had also calmed, the boat left the harbor later than planned.

Watch out

The forecast and the actual conditions are separate clues; the boat does not leave just because the captain checks the forecast.
