A transcript lets you compare what you heard with what was actually said. Use the examples as short scripts for the routine.

The idea

Choose a short recording with a matching transcript, such as an Irodori dialogue. Listen once without reading and note the situation and key details. Replay a short stretch and write what you hear; mark gaps instead of guessing. Check the transcript, compare each gap with the audio, then listen again without looking.

Examples

  • 明日あしたは雨あめが降ふります。It will rain tomorrow.
  • 電車でんしゃは九時くじに出でます。The train leaves at nine.
  • 駅えきで友達ともだちを待まちます。I will wait for a friend at the station.
  • 今日きょうは図書館としょかんが休やすみです。The library is closed today.
  • 午後ごごに電話でんわをかけます。I will call in the afternoon.
  • 水みずをもう一杯いっぱいください。Another glass of water, please.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Japanese voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Reading along from the start can make a sentence feel understood even when its sounds are unclear. Check the audio and text match, and do not mistake recognising written words for hearing them.

Try it yourself

  1. 電車でんしゃは_に出でます。(九時くじ/午後ごご)

    Show answer or example answer

    九時

九時 means nine o’clock: the train leaves at nine. Listen for the time before checking the script.

  2. 今日きょうは図書館としょかんが_です。(休やすみ/雨あめ)

    Show answer or example answer

    休み

休み means closed here: the library is closed today. Compare that word with the sound after が.

  3. 水みずをもう_ください。(一杯いっぱい/一人ひとり)

    Show answer or example answer

    一杯

一杯 means one glass or cup; もう一杯 asks for another. Listen for the whole phrase rather than a single sound.

Use it today

Use a short recording and its transcript. Note one missed time or word, replay that part, then hide the transcript and listen once more.
