Choose what you want to highlight: a recurring link, a gradual change or the occasion for another event. This B1 comparison introduces the meaning of -dikçe; its full range of forms belongs to later study.

The idea

-dikçe highlights repetition or an ongoing relationship: baktıkça means “each time I look” in the photo example; okudukça daha hızlı okuyorum links more reading to greater speed. -ince places an event in relation to another: bakınca gülümsedim describes a smile on one occasion. But -ince also works in a habitual sentence: Teyzem bize gelince yeni bir hikâye anlatır. The main verb and context help decide whether this happens once or regularly.

Examples

  • Ben bu fotoğrafa baktıkça gülümsüyorum.Every time I look at this photograph, I smile.
  • Ben bu fotoğrafa bakınca gülümsedim. When I looked at this photograph, I smiled.
  • Ben okudukça daha hızlı okuyorum. The more I read, the faster I read.
  • Annem notu okuyunca kapıyı açtı.When my mother read the note, she opened the door.
  • Su ısındıkça şeker daha kolay eriyor. As the water gets warmer, the sugar dissolves more easily.
  • Su kaynayınca ocağı kapat. When the water boils, turn off the stove.
  • Teyzem bize gelince yeni bir hikâye anlatır.When my aunt visits us, she tells a new story.
  • Teyzem bize geldikçe yeni bir hikâye anlatır.Every time my aunt visits us, she tells a new story.

Watch out

Do not read -ince as an automatic promise of “immediately”. Su kaynayınca ocağı kapat tells you when to act; adding hemen explicitly says “immediately”. Nor should you reject gelince simply because the sentence describes a habit: geldikçe makes the repetition more prominent.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the form that explicitly stresses each repeated look at the photograph.

    Show answer or example answer

    baktıkça

baktıkça: the instruction asks you to foreground every fresh look at the photo. Bakınca could fit a habitual sentence too, but leaves the repetition to the wider context.

  2. Choose the form for one occasion yesterday: we read the note, then opened the door.

    Show answer or example answer

    okuyunca

okuyunca: the note was read on a single occasion yesterday, then the door was opened. Okudukça would suggest an ongoing or repeated relationship, not this completed sequence.

  3. Choose the form for gradual change: the warmer the water gets, the more easily the sugar dissolves.

    Show answer or example answer

    ısındıkça

ısındıkça: dissolving becomes easier as the temperature rises. Isınınca would instead locate the result at the point when the water has warmed up.

  4. This describes a habit. Either option can fit; enter one acceptable form.

    Show answer or example answer

    geldikçe / gelince

geldikçe / gelince: both fit the aunt’s habit. Geldikçe foregrounds each visit; with gelince, the general statement anlatır and the context support the habitual reading.

Use it today
